For almost six hundred years Mexico City grew slowly. Most of that time residential desirability declined with distance from the central plaza. But in recent years, under the influence of rapidly growing population, new industries, and improvements in the means of transportation, the metropolis seems to be shifting toward a basic configuration similar to that of the large cities of the United States
