This paper analyses the different dimensions of freedom of association in Italy. Section 1 introduces the topic and highlights some methodological issues related to comparative law. Section 2 briefly describes the evolution of the provisions protecting freedom of association in Italy from the Albertine Statute to the 1948 Constitution and gives an overview of the various constitutional provisions in which there is an intersection between the issue of freedom of association and the protection of intermediate bodies. Section 3 analyses the entitlement to the right to freedom of association and outlines some past and present derogations for certain categories of public servants, the regulation of constitutionally prohibited associations and the issue of compulsory associations. Section 4 analyses the rights in associations and the rights of associations focusing on compulsory associations and ideologically oriented organisations. Section 5 draws some conclusions and points out some recent legislative trends
