In discussions with Indian colleagues-anthropologists representing the largest country in the Global South, Russia’s position as a key country in the North is especially clear. Continuing his research on the northernness of Russia, the author consistently contrasts this natural identity with the popular, but incomprehensible and dead-end antithesis “Russia – West or East?” The substantiation of Russia’s northern identity from the perspective of history and anthropology includes sections “The Birth of Rus”, “Novgorod and the Midnight Countries”, “Pomors and the Northern Passage”, “Northern Capital”, “Northern Expedition”, “Meanings and Rhymes” (images of the North in philosophy and poetry), “Shades of Northernness of the 20th century.” The characteristics of the North and northernness, from the author’s point of view, include: “Power over one’s Own Destiny”, “The Land of Freedom”, “The Art of Movement”, “Unity with Nature”, “Aesthetics of Winter”, “Land of Wonders, Riches and Heroes”, “From Silence to Poetry,” “Unobtrusive Self-Awareness.” The view from India of Russia as an expressive and original country of the North once again highlights the northern identity of Russia, inspiring ethnographers and historians of Russia, especially its northern regions, including Sakha-Yakutia, to study the ethno-cultural heritage and develop concepts of the identity of the peoples of the North and the Arctic
