The claims of the Freudians regarding the importance of infant training to personality adjustment were tested empirically by setting up a series of null hypotheses concerning the relationship of specific infant disciplines, undergone by 162 farm children of old American stock, to subsequent personality adjustments. The findings indicate that none of the disciplines was significantly related to childhool personality adjustment as measured in this study. Consequently, considerable doubt is cast upon the general validity of the Freudian claims and the efficacy of the prescriptions based on them
