A new trend of modern Chinese life has become the harmonious combination of economic and technological achievements with the basic elements of traditional Chinese culture. This has provided the basis for a long-term state program for the development of the living environment, which has received the characteristic name “Beautiful China”. This program implies the preservation of traditional cultural heritage, including decorative art, as the most important factor in harmonizing human relations with the modern world. The theoretical goal of this publication is to identify, through aesthetic and communicative means, the role of traditional decorative ele-ments of Chinese visual culture in creating a harmonious living environment in modern China. The analysis of the functions of traditional Chinese ornament is considered from the perspective of general communication theory, fundamental tenets of semiology, and a specialized aesthetic subdiscipline, which in contemporary research has become the discourse of the object environment with its characteristic key concept of “atmos-phere”. The authors see the intersection of several approaches to examining the fate of Chinese ornamental heritage as the scientific novelty of the proposed paper, as well as the potential interest of specialized audienc-es studying aesthetic responses, the theory of aesthetic information transmission, and the fate of artistic herit-age
