In two Florida communities which have a disproportionately large population of older people, an analysis was made of the organizations to which the latter belong. The number of organizations in which individuals are members and their attendance at secular and religious meetings were examined. A large proportion of nonparticipation and a preponderance of religious membership and attendance were found. On the basis of the various creteria, formal participation of one type or another was found to be related to sex, marital status, education, and source of income before retirement
