The article is devoted to the figure of the distinguished Polish archaeologist Jan Machnik and his significant contribution to the study of prehistoric cultures in Central and Eastern Europe. Drawing on colleagues’ memoirs, the paper highlights his scholarly, organisational, and pedagogical activities, with particular emphasis on his role in fostering international cooperation after Ukraine’s independence. Special attention is given to the long-term Ukrainian–Polish archaeological expedition in the Upper Dniester region, which constituted a major milestone in the investigation of burial mounds and settlement sites. The main research directions are outlined, including survey work, excavations, and the application of interdisciplinary approaches. The study emphasises the substantial outcomes of the expedition, notably the discovery of thousands of archaeological sites and new insights into Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Early Iron Age cultures. It also underlines the scholar’s contribution to academic training, research organisation, and the promotion of archaeological heritage. Particular focus is placed on his personal qualities, such as scientific intuition, dedication to fieldwork, and ability to inspire younger researchers. The article concludes by assessing the lasting importance of his legacy for contemporary archaeology
