The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the Nart epos and magical fairy-tales of the Karachais and Balkarians. The subject of the study was the transformation of the image of emegen, first traced through the example of one of his hypostases – the owner / keeper of wonderful objects. In the national Nartiada, emegens are represented by two conventional categories – a chthonic monster and a representative of an alien neighboring people. The level of development of material culture among the former is much lower, but both of them are the owners of wonderful artifacts. These are mainly weapons, but a number of household items are also mentioned. It is noted, that some attributes, possessed by the emegens of the first type, are closely related to the ancient ideas of the creator people. Moreover, the giants themselves act as miraculous creatures, parts of whose bodies have supernatural properties. Both types of emegens are also found in Karachay-Balkarian fairy-tales. The range of wonderful objects, that they possess, keep, or know about, is somewhat wider here, but the method of acquiring them is often different: taking possession by force or cunning is replaced by donation. In some cases, emegens of the second type report the location and conditions for obtaining the necessary object. This phenomenon is explained by changes in the perception of emegens in fairy-tales: this is a representative of an alien people, but not a sworn enemy, but a wise neighbor, friend, brother. In the end it is concluded, that in Karachay-Balkarian Nart tales and magical fairy-tales there is a gradual decline in the image of the emegen from a chthonic monster to a representative of a friendly neighboring people. This is expressed both in the loss of their miraculous properties by the giants, and in the fact, that in fairy-tale texts wonderful attributes, the owners, keepers of which they are or know about, in most cases are not associated with heroic pathos, the motive of irreconcilable enmity. The method of acquiring a wonderful item is also changing
