The hypothesis that the extent of part-time farming is directly related to a measure of off-farm oppotunities and, independent of this, inversely related to a measure of opportunities in agriculture is tested, using the counties of Wisconsin as units. This hypothesis is supported by the analysis of all farmers considered together and of commercial farmers considered separately, while the facts about non-commercial farmers are not inconsistent with the hypothesis in view of the uniformly low opportunities in agriculture for this segment
