This study of differential risk in schizophrenia among the Okinawan and Naichi Japanese in Hawaii directs attention to possible links between ethnicity and types of pesonality disturbances. Although both subgroupings within the Japanese are similar in in-hospital diagnoses of schizophrenia, the Okinawans are disproportionately higher in risk. Both in risk schizophrenia and in general admission to a mental hospital, the introduction of control variables does not statistically control out the effects of subethnic membership. To determine the effects of ethnicity and other social-cultural influences, further study with additional comparison groups is suggested in the polyethnic Hawaiian setting
