The construction throughout the 18th century of three military arsenals in the Iberian Peninsula, fostered by the Borbon naval policy, made it possible to have important naval infrastructures. As for the city of Cartagena, it was provided with a magnificent shipyardthat lacked nothing. But at the beginning of the 19th century the situation changed and the facilities, abandoned to their fate by various political and economic vicissitudes, needed to be renovated and reconditioned in depth. Our purpose of this study will be to analyse historically this process, of huge technical importance, which meant a major breakthrough for the national and international shipbuilding industry, and in which the floating iron dock of the most advanced technology of that time plays a special role
