This article proposes comparative research between the countercultural contexts that developed in Madrid and Buenos Aires in the post-dictatorial moments that both societies went through between the seventies and the nineties. This analysis reveals how youth cultures in Buenos Aires and Madrid evolved in constant dialogue with institutions and urban imaginaries, configuringnew meanings of modernity and cultural creation. Both of these cases show similar tensions between the creative impulse of young people, who were key agents in the transitional contexts, and the attempts at institutionalisation that sought to control and order their practices and the spaces they inhabited. The cultural circulation among these cities emphasises the existence of transnational exchanges, which not only disseminated images but also allowed for the participation and production of transgressive initiatives in local contexts
