Study of a probability sample of an urban county using an adaptation of the semantic differential showed differences in perceptions of tuberculosis to be associated with educational level, social class, and most markedly, with ethnic-group membership. In addition to displaying quantitative disparities on numerous scales, the three ethnic groups studied approached tuberculosis with surprisingly different structures of meaning, as revealed by factor analyses. The group differences in belief and feelings, both quantitative and structural, are related to the tuberculosis morbidity and mortality experience of the white and non-white subpopulations of this county and state. The findings illustrate the role of the collective experience of the group in shaping individual beliefs and feelings
