The point of departure for this study is the book, The Family and Population Control, by Hill, Stycos, and Back. In it they report a correlation between two typologies each having eight family types reflecting "urbanity" on one hand and "familism" on the other hand. They hypothesize that this correlation is pehaps due to the "sharing of common life experiences and values and the learning of common patterns of family decision-making." In the present research, this general hypothesis is tested in a small Puerto Rican town specifically selected because it was under the impact of economic and social change. The findings of this study support their general hypothesis in full
