Societal climate impacts are complex social and economic phenomena and processes, such as subsistence crises, epidemic diseases or damage to infrastructure. They are triggered or influenced, but not caused by extreme weather and climate variability alone. This article briefly presents theoretical approaches to climate impact on society and discusses examples from Switzerland in the period from 1300 to 1700 with a view to application in school teaching
