Societal climate impacts are complex social and economic phenomena and processes, such as subsistence crises or damage to infrastructure. They are triggered, but not caused by extreme weather and climate variability alone. In this paper, theoretical approaches to social climate impacts are briefly presented and examples from Switzerland during the period from 1300 to 1700 are discussed
