Because the portraits of Yuan emperors and empresses present their deel only partially, they provide information primarily on color, while offering little detail regarding the form and design, or ornamental patterns below the collar, nor do they reveal clear information about the materials used. However, when these portraits are examined in comparison with other scholarly sources, it becomes possible to more accurately infer the materials represented. Therefore, we conducted a careful comparison of archaeological finds, written sources, and other pictorial sources from that time. Although the fabrics in the portraits are not always distinctly rendered, the results of existing research indicate that the principal materials used for the garments of the elite during this period were silk and gold-brocaded silk textiles. Color is the one aspect that can be directly and reliably observed from the depictions of deels in the portraits. For the Mongols, the choice of clothing color held significant meaning; therefore ,the color of the deels of the people in the portraits was certainly not chosen arbitrarily. Of the 23 portraits examined for this study, 2 are white, 1 is green, 1 is beige, and 19 are red orred-related hues. The results of the research confirm that those colors were the noble colors of the Mongolian deel clothing of the time. Wearing white and red clothes in particular was a symbol of royalty and rank.
