INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a significant demand for mental health care, reflecting the negative impacts of the crisis on both the general population and healthcare workers. Addressing these challenges required internal resources from professionals, both physically and emotionally. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the consequences of the pandemic on the work and personal lives of frontline nursing staff, and to investigate the coping mechanisms they employed. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive study using a qualitative approach. Twelve professionals who worked on the frontline during the pandemic and currently work at a teaching hospital were interviewed. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews using a questionnaire developed by the authors. Data analysis was conducted using Bardin's Content Analysis method. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic caused significant disruptions in the lives of healthcare professionals, leading to various health issues. Coping strategies were identified, including resilience, gratitude for learning experiences, and redefining the suffering endured. Despite developing symptoms of stress, workers managed to transform destructive effects into learning opportunities and acquisition of new skills, despite the lack of governmental and institutional support
