This contribution presents a qualitative and quantitative analysis of 127 interviews with speakers of Alemannic from the German side of the Upper Rhine area close to the French border. Focussing on the informants’ statements regarding three thematic fields - regional ties with Alsace, language choice in cross-border communication, and comprehension of the Alsatian dialect - it is shown that the orientation towards the Alsace is diminishing, while differences can be attested depending on age and region. The dialectal divergence that can be observed at the national border is reflected on the attitudinal level
