The article focuses on the Russian adversative conjunction «zato» (“but”) as an axiological marker and its stylistically significant use in M.A. Sholokhov’s novels «And quiet flows the Don» and «Virgin soil upturned». The article also puts forward the concept of «axiological stylistics». It is noted that axiological stylistics describes the techniques which facilitate the participation of evaluation linguistic units in the expression of certain expressive intentions. It is shown that in M.A. Sholokhov’s novels «And quiet flows the Don» and «Virgin soil upturned» the adversative conjunction «zato» (“but”) is used as a polysemous function word, and the most productive semantics of compensation involves switching of evaluation both from «-» to «+» and from «+» to «-», although the first evaluation model prevails. Based on this semantics alone, the adversative conjunction «zato» (“but”) participates in the creation of six techniques of axiological stylistics
