This paper intends to examine the role and special place of the Latin novel in the development and definition of the novel as a genre in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century France. While the Greek novelists were elevated by scholars and authors to the rank of models to be followed, Petronius and Apuleius, who were not unknown, were sidelined and found their audience far from any process of canonisation. The aim here is to highlight the fundamentally bifrons dimension of these authors, who, although they were not considered proper novelists, nevertheless participated in the rich process of (re)configuring the genre by indirectly inspiring authors who sought mixed sources to develop novelistic counterpoints to the Baroque norm
