This paper reviews the evolution of advertising in Chile between 1850 and 1950, analyzing how it evolved from simple informative advertisements to sophisticated and persuasive advertisements that financed the press media. This transformation reflects the economic and social development of the country during the modernization process and is materialized in the increasing volume of advertisements published in newspapers. Three types of advertisers were identified, as well as changes in target audiences in terms of gender, age and occupation, and four stages in the periodization of Chilean advertising are proposed
