The paper, “Balancing Freedom and Responsibility: A Study of Childhood Agency in Megan McDonald’s Judy Moody Declares independence”! examines how freedom and responsibility is balanced in a child’s world through the continuous interaction of the internalized Childhood agency in a child with the family and social structures around the child, in Megan McDonald’s Judy Moody Declares Independence! The study begins by exploring the different dimensions of Childhood Agency portrayed by the author by analysing the character arc of the protagonist Judy Moody. It goes on to bring out how the Protagonist’s quest for independence shapes her development and growth, by drawing ideas from contemporary childhood studies. Then, the study presents how the use of historical parody as a narrative technique by the author delivers the story in an effective and humorous way. The study also discusses the role of parental scaffolding and the impact of revolution, drama, roleplay and heroism in the development of Childhood Agency. The paper argues that the author does not present Childhood Agency in absolute freedom but presents it as a relational concept bound with self-governance and social responsibility. Further, it elaborates how the author highlights the balance between autonomy and accountability and foregrounds the child as an active agent capable of reflection, negotiation and growth, challenging traditional perceptions of child as passive and subordinate being. By concluding that when children are trusted with meaningful choices and guided towards responsible action children attain holistic development the study contributes to broader discussions on Identity formation and Self-reliance in contemporary children’s literature
