The generation of filmmakers who reached maturity after the Lebanese Civil War faced a devastated cinema landscape. Still, drawing on the legacy of the previous period, which had already been characterized by extensive internationalization, these artists contributed to the restructuring of Lebanese cinema through its relationships to international actors. These relationships informed the sectors of training, production, distribution, as well as the themes and aesthetics of this artistic renaissance. Lebanese cinema has become actively involved in transnational cultural trends. It is a cinema of exile as much as a cinema of the diaspora and a “world cinema” that is celebrated in international festivals as well as a cinema that is a recognized actor in the countries where it operates. Post-war Lebanese cinema is rooted in these international circulations; by negotiating the power relations connecting it to funding institutions and audiences, it has also developed a reflection on its own identity
