This article studies the process of elaboration and publication of General Manuel de Mendiburu’s Historical-Biographical Dictionary of Peru, composed of eight volumes printed between 1874 and 1890. It analyzes the author’s role as a historian, his relationships with other intellectuals, and his fondness for collecting historical sources. It also provides an insight into the Dictionary’s contribution to the elaboration of national history through the biographies of important figures who lived in colonial Peru. Finally, it examines some of the main criticisms that arose at the time regarding the work, which did not overshadow its significance and contribution to our understanding of the past
