Aligning India’s Development Agenda with the Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations adopted, 17 sustainable development goals (SDGS), in 2015. These goals were framed to provide a uniform platform to all the countries to address pressing global challenges through integrated social, economic, and environmental targets. Since 2014, India witnessed a revolutionary political change wherein unlike history, a non-congress party, led by a non- Gandhi related leader was leading the country, trying to carve a new history and a new chapter to the country as well as the world. In such a scenario, political stability along with economic progress was obligatory on the government. Hence, for India, aligning its development policies with the SDGS became both a national priority and a global responsibility, especially given its scale, diversity, and leadership position in the global south. This paper critically examines India’s efforts to integrate the SDGS into its national development agenda, with a particular emphasis on the human development dimensions of health, education, gender equality, and poverty reduction. By depending on the secondary data like national policy documents, progress reports and recent data available, this paper focuses on the achievements of the country in reducing multidimensional poverty, expansion of social protection schemes, improvements in access to sanitation, and increased renewable energy capacity. It highlights India’s flagship programmes and decentralized mechanisms such as gram panchayat development plans and district indicator frameworks, showcasing promising practices and persisting challenges. Irrespective of these progress, country continues to face critical challenges like regional disparities and financing gaps to weak local-level implementation and persistent social inequalities
