The development of the Far East began in the 17th century with the expeditions of the Cossacks, who founded prisons, which became control centers. However, the population growth was held back by the harsh climate, gender imbalance, and conflicts with local tribes. In the 19th century, systemic measures (military colonization, peasant resettlement, sea transportation) contributed to the increase in the population, although by the beginning of the 20th century it did not exceed 1.3 million people. During the Soviet period, the demography of the region developed under the influence of industrialization, forced migration, and infrastructure projects. By 1989, the population reached 8 million, however structural problems (staff turnover, lack of infrastructure) led to the crisis of the 1990s. Thus, the demographic history of the Far East reflects the cyclical nature caused by the government regulation and socio-economic conditions. The sustainability of the population depended not only on migration policy, but also on the balanced development of the region
