The Motif of Magic Assistant in Kalmyk Folktales Revisited

Introduction.The motif of a hero’s assistant serves a plot-forming element in Kalmyk folktales. Researchers note that the main character of the Kalmyk folktale is assisted by humans and animals, orthomorphic assistants and wonderful objects. Goals. The article examines the motif of assistant for plot type ATU 513 ‘The Extraordinary Companions’. In the oral tradition of the Kalmyks, this plot type is represented by subtypes, gets implemented as an independent plot, as well as in contamination. Results. The plot-forming motif of the wonderful helper in folktales for plot type 513 is realized in various ways. The hero’s willing helpers are not only humans with superpowers (‘Rearranging Mountains’, ‘Shaking the Earth’, ‘Drinking Seas’, ‘The Listener’, etc.) but also grateful animals. Wonderful comrades who have power over the forces of nature cope with all difficult tasks of the Khan, which makes it possible for the hero to marry the latter’s daughter. The miraculous properties of helpers enable them to avoid imminent death at the hands of the ruler. Sometimes those inflict punishment on a hostile Khan (mangas), they also save the hero’s wife and his son. At the same time, one should note such folktale collisions when the hero sets a heavenly maiden or Tara free from a fifteen-headed mangas, thus, himself acting as assistant
