Waste management is challenging due to improper waste disposal practices and a lack of knowledge on the part of several stakeholders. In the tourism industry, improper waste management is of substantial concern. The Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal, India, the two tourism hotspots, host more than four lakh tourists/year, with a market of US$100 million, significantly contributing to the region's economic development. However, it presents unique challenges in adhering to state-level waste management policies, being the two major hilly districts in the state. Thus, this study is conducted to assess the factors affecting sustainable waste management adopted by the tourism industry of the region. Such factors include awareness and perception regarding waste management practices, along with other organisational factors like education and gender of the owner, revenue earned, and nature of business, etc. Questionnaires are circulated among the enterprises engaged directly or as an allied activity in the tourism industry. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling, or PLS-SEM, is performed to understand the factors inducing waste management practices. The findings revealed that waste management practices face complex challenges restricted by socio-economic factors, where awareness and perception play a positive and significant role in determining the adoption of waste management practices. It highlights the need for increased awareness and effective regional policy implementation to ensure the sustainable development and growth of the tourism industry in the region, promoting a circular economy
