This article is written with the understanding that the Hebrew Bible records, in general, the testimony of God’s image in both senses, good and bad ways (cruel, violent). This article aims to identify several texts in the Hebrew Bible that depict God in a violent manner. Because it has the potential to legitimate and encourage violence, God’s image is viewed as problematic and troubling. Three attempts, at least, have been constructed to deal with the problematic image of God. Firstly, defending the image of God by stating that everything God does is for a good thing. Secondly, utilizing the method of interpretation claiming that God does not really enforce violence. Thirdly, acknowledging the problematic image of God as part of God, protesting the image, and arguing that humans do not imitate the violent God. By employing the critical analysis method on a number of texts, this article revisits the three attempts to interpret the problematic image of God. In conclusion, this study proposes a reading principle for dealing with the problematic image of God: befriend the problematic image of God while protesting against it. In this way, readers avoid justifying and imitating the violent image of God. Keywords: imitating God, Interpretations, Problematic Image of God, Hebrew Bible, testimony. Abstrak: Naskah ini datang dengan kesadaran bahwa Kitab Suci Ibrani mencatat, dalam pengertian yang umum, kesaksian tentang gambar Allah yang baik dan tidak (kejam, penuh kekerasan). Naskah ini bertujuan untuk mengindentifikasi sejumlah teks dalam Kitab Suci Ibrani yang menarasikan mengenai gambar Allah yang berkonotasi kekerasan. Gambar Allah itu dipandang problematis dan meresahkan karena berpotensi untuk melegitimasi dan mendukung kekerasan. Setidaknya, ada tiga usaha yang telah dikonstruksi untuk berurusan dengan gambar Allah yang problematis. Pertama, membela gambar Allah dengan menyatakan bahwa semua yang Allah lakukan demi kebaikan. Kedua, menggunakan metode tafsir yang mengeklaim bahwa Allah tidak sungguh memberlakukan kekerasan. Ketiga, mengakui gambar Allah yang problematis sebagai bagian dari Allah dan memprotes gambar Allah itu sembari menyatakan bahwa manusia tidak mengimitasi gambar Allah yang berkonotasi kekerasan. Dengan metode analisis kritis pada sejumlah teks, naskah ini meninjau ulang ketiga usaha menginterpretasi gambar Allah yang problematis tersebut. Sebagai kesimpulan, naskah ini menawarkan sebuah prinsip membaca untuk berurusan dengan gambar Allah yang problematis: bersahabat dengan gambar Allah yang problematis sembari memprotesnya. Dengan demikian, para pembaca terhindar dari menjustifikasi dan mengimitasi gambar Allah yang berkonotasi kekerasan.
