This article analyzes Fromm's thought through Escape from Freedom (1941), a major work that articulates Psychoanalysis and Social Sciences. While acknowledging Freud's inspiration and legacy, Fromm criticizes Freudian anthropology founded on libido, retaining the notion of the unconscious, which he reformulates based on the concept of "social character". Extending the intuitions of La Boétie's Discourse on Voluntary Servitude, he shows how individuals may seek to escape their modern freedom, clarifying the attraction to totalitarian regimes as a response to insecurity and feelings of powerlessness. Replacing Freud's death drive with the concept of necrophilia, he develops a humanist conception of man who is drawn to the possibilities of autonomy, creativity, and emancipation
