We analyze Mexican trade with the main Asia-Pacific economies at three levels. First, through the concepts of “Asianization” and “Sinicization” of Mexican imports, we examine two key characteristics of Mexico’s relations with Asian economies and China. Second, we compare the four most recent General Import and Export Tax Laws (GIETL) in force, including the modifications introduced and proposed by the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, in order to establish a diagnosis of the trade policies pursued by the federal administrations behind these GIETLs. Third, we analyze the impact of GIETL 2025 on trade with Asian economies, distinguishing between those that have trade agreements with the Mexican government and those that do not, in order to highlight the forms of government protectionism
