The article is devoted to the analysis of the hypothesis about the Alanian source of the coat of arms of the Portuguese city of Coimbra. In the course of recent research, the coat of arms of this city was included in the circle of other heraldic symbols, also associated with the Alan tradition. A statement about its semantics due to the work of Bernardo de Brito represents the dominant one. However, this issue was resolved without either a specific or a comprehensive consideration, which took the problem of source analysis beyond the scope of research, not allowing the results obtained to be verified. There are various approaches and solutions in evaluating the data of written sources, in which the sources themselves remain outside the analysis. This provision determines the relevance of the problem proposed for consideration. The novelty of the research lies in the analysis of specific data sources, which is complemented by their consideration in the historical and cultural context of the Middle Ages. The purpose of the study is to identify possible sources underlying the narrative of Bernardo de Brito. The objectives of the study are to establish the origins of ideas about the corresponding heraldic symbol, as medieval authors presented it. The study used methods of textual research of sources, visual analysis of pictorial monuments, inductive and logical analysis based on the principle of historicism and systematic presentation. As a result of the conducted study, it is established that the story proposed to Bernardo de Brito about the Alanian component of the coat of arms of the city of Coimbra, supported by some modern authors, cannot unconditionally claim its historicity. Socio-political moments in the history of Portugal dictated its inclusion in the patriotic movement of its time, actualized by some issues in the development of heraldry proper. There is a probable falsification of the source base for achieving patriotic goals on the part of Bernardo de Brito, who also used some really historical information
