Terraformed is a short, complicated and somewhat risky endeavour. It is my attempt to speak to a global, afro-diasporic, Black Atlantic experience. It is an act of loving blackness, a reminder that our lives, even if seen as hyperlocal and specific, connect beyond the confines of borders, boundaries and nations. My starting point was to foreground that although the language and framing about young Black people is more often than not a narrative of gangs and violence, feral youth and alien spaces, our lived experiences are built on a foundation of joy, creativity and expression.I would like to acknowledge the generosity of the readers, and having the opportunity to engage with their thoughts has been so useful.Opening out a wider discussion has been both generative and valuable in terms of teasing out and clarifying my own arguments.Using my sociological imagination made it possible to connect private issues and public concerns relating to racism, austerity, inequality and violence. However, I was also driven by a desire for intimate, up close, sociology. My aim was to produce scholarly work that might engage young people and provide them with the tools not only to understand the world they live in but to change it.A world where as Margherita Grazioli indicates, at one end of the continuum there is brutality and at other the polarisation of everyday life.By focusing on a local area, I developed a new conceptual toolhyperlocal demarcationusing legislation, communities, the sonic landscape and town planning to analyse the impact of gentrification, austerity, neoliberalism and racism on young
