The history of football supporterism is in full development, and recent research has shown its importance from the interwar period, and even before 1914. The case of Le Havre Athletic Club provides an opportunity to document this new research. The "Supporters and Friends of HAC" club brought together around 1,000 people who wanted to distinguish themselves from mere spectators. It played an important role in the adoption of professionalism by the oldest club in French football. Their enthusiastic support in the stands of the Cavée Verte stadium helped the club make its way up to the second division and into the elite in 1938, while also performing well in the French Cup. Unlike their rivals FC Rouen, Le Havre's fans enjoyed an excellent relationship with their directors, and even supported them financially when the club ran into difficulties
