This chapter discusses the fate of approximately 3,800 Jewish deportees from various German cities who arrived in the Warsaw ghetto in April 1942. It examines how their arrival challenged the ghetto’s social structures and its internal social dynamics and resulted in the sudden increased involvement of the German administration in the internal affairs of the ghetto. For many Polish Jews, the arrival of German Jews underlined the ‘east European’ character of the Warsaw ghetto, its distance from the Jewish communities of central and western Europe, which still survived at this time, and its increasing closeness to the accelerating process of mass murder in the east
