This essay explores the concept of human nature, arguing against the extreme positions of biological determinism and cultural relativism. Kroeber suggests that human nature is a complex interplay of biological potentialities and cultural shaping. He emphasizes the role of culture in channeling and modifying innate drives and predispositions, leading to the diversity of human behavior across societies. While acknowledging the biological basis of certain human characteristics, he stresses the plasticity and adaptability of human behavior under the influence of cultural learning and transmission. Kroeber concludes that understanding human nature requires a balanced approach that recognizes both the biological and cultural factors that contribute to the human condition
