This article examines shifts in the emphasis placed on different aspects of social structure by anthropologists. Murdock argues that earlier anthropological focus on kinship and family structures is giving way to a greater emphasis on broader social organization, including political, economic, and religious institutions. He suggests this shift is driven by the increasing complexity of societies under study and the need to understand social change. Murdock advocates for a more holistic approach to social structure analysis, incorporating both kinship and broader institutional frameworks to provide a more complete understanding of societies
