Resumo
This article explores the variations in postmarital residence rules across different societies and examines the factors influencing these variations. Goodenough argues against a simple unilinear evolutionary explanation and proposes a more nuanced approach that considers factors such as kinship terminology, descent rules, and the relative economic contributions of men and women. He introduces a typology of residence rules based on the jural and behavioral aspects of kinship and residence, distinguishing between preferential and prescriptive rules. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the specific cultural context and social organization of each society to accurately interpret its residence patterns.
