Ellen Basso challenges David Schneider's interpretation of Xingu Carib kinship terminology, arguing that his analysis, based on the distinction between "pure" and "contingent" relations, misrepresents the Carib system. Basso demonstrates that Schneider's approach fails to account for the dynamic and flexible nature of Carib kinship, which incorporates both genealogical and social factors. She proposes an alternative interpretation that emphasizes the importance of affinal relationships and the fluid boundaries between kinship categories, highlighting the role of marriage in shaping social structure and individual identities within Xingu Carib society
