There has been a strong tendency in recent years among students of Afro-American communities to argue that prevalent modes of action in these communities provide an adaptation to a specific depressed niche in the structure of the wider society. This kind of interpretation is often offered as an alternative to analyses in cultural terms, which are thus rejected. This paper argues that even if the ecological interpretation is accepted, questions remain which may best be answered in cultural terms, and that ecological and cultural analyses are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. "Cultural dynamics" is viewed as intellectual process in social relationships
