One important function of the teeth is mastication. It is suggested that the sums of the areas of the posterior teeth be used as a measure of the amount of mastication occurring in a population. It is hypothesized that the sum of the posterior areas is a selectively important characteristic because it measures dental function. This hypothesis is tested by comparing bilateral length, breadth, and area correlations and also by comparing the variances of individual posterior tooth areas to the variances of the sums of all of the posterior tooth areas
