This essay examines the production of Ingeborg Bachmann's first literary radio drama, Ein Geschäft mit Träumen (1952), in light of the author's reflections on Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time (1922) by drawing on her analysis of Proust's work in her lecture "Das schreibende Ich" (1959). It proposes that the rich tapestry of perceptions, memory, and experience in her script for Ein Geschäft mit Träumen creates a "hearing I," that, like Proust's "writing I," engages the audience's sense perceptions and encourages their critical reflection. This intertextual and inter-medial reading of Bachmann's play sheds light on her unique understanding of the narrative capabilities of the radio. For Bachmann, the isolation of the acoustic sense in the radio drama offered new possibilities to reveal to the audience their existential blindness and to guide them toward truth or Erkenntnis, her vision for the work of art
