By positing all past mediations as interconnectable samples, rap music's central aesthetic technique anticipates the distributed ways of knowing characteristic of the digital age. Th is self-reflexive connection to the mediations of the past, while characteristic of the entire genre, is especially prominent in Austrian rap. By investigating the connections between the classic rap song "Rebel Without a Pause" and an Austrian song that bears a remarkable resemblance to it, this essay illustrates the central aesthetic technique of rap music, sketching its historical development and showing how the particularities of its path to Austria have led to its extreme deployment there, making Austrian rap a particularly strong example of how originally analog aesthetics prefigure the epistemology of the digital age
