Within the trend of recent scholarship underlining the importance of specific and localized context for the engagement of Christian elites by the Qaraquyunlu and Aqquyunlu ‘Turkmen’ dynasties of the fifteenth century, this article proposes that two sources commonly interpreted as indicating ‘the’ policy of uzun Ḥasan Aqquyunlu (d. 1478) toward his Armenian Christian subjects in fact pertain to a very specific situation. Both written in 1473, the Armenian historiographical poem of Movsēs Arckec‘i and the report of the Venetian envoy Caterino Zeno describe the same coherent programme of performative patronage granted to Armenian Christian sites around the plain of Muş by uzun Ḥasan in the preceding year of 1472. Between his great eastern conquests of 1467–1469 and his confrontation with the Ottoman ruler Mehmed II in 1473, uzun Ḥasan accordingly consolidated Aqquyunlu rule over the plain of Muş by commissioning architectural works and making donations at Armenian Christian monasteries and churches
