Albion W. Small is known more for discipline‐building than for contributions to substantive sociology or to theory. He chaired the first department of sociology at the University of Chicago from its beginning in 1892 to 1924 and in that role influenced generations of American sociologists. In 1895 he established the discipline's first professional publication, the American Journal of Sociology . He helped to found the American Sociological Society in 1905 and served two terms as its president
