B ücher, K arl (1847–1930)

The economist Karl Bücher made important contributions to economic anthropology in Die Entstehung der Volkswirtschaft (1893) ( Industrial Evolution 1901) and Arbeit und Rhythmus (Work and Rhythm) (1896). In the first book, he analyzed the domestic mode of production (independent domestic economy) and the reciprocal relations between households regarding gifts and the exchange of labor. His ideas influenced Bronisław Malinowski, Richard Thurnwald, Marcel Mauss, Karl Polanyi, Alexander Chayanov, and Marshall Sahlins. In the second book, Bücher analyzes long and strenuous work processes in societies with little technical equipment. Work that is performed rhythmically enables the worker to keep up monotonous activities. Musical instruments and work songs also support work performance. Work, play, music, and poetry form a single unit. Bücher also had a considerable impact on industrial sociology and folklore studies
