Satish Saberwal, an American‐trained Indian anthropologist, worked on the intersections between social anthropology and historical sociology. Influenced by his mentor, Victor Turner, Saberwal used the comparative method to examine long‐term trajectories of institutions, ideas, and processes in India and Europe. Among his important works are Mobile Men: Limits to Social Change in Urban Punjab (1976), Wages of Segmentation: Comparative Historical Studies on Europe and India (1995), Roots of Crisis: Interpreting Contemporary Indian Society (1996), and Spirals of Contention: Why India Was Partitioned in 1947 (2008)
