Dell Hymes has been one of the key figures in the anthropology of language and his work continues to be cited as a marker for work in this field. In particular, he helped, with others such as Gumperz, the move away from a Chomskyan formal view of language toward a more social practice perspective, making the case for ethnographic investigation into contrasting patterns of language use in speech communities. Other central concepts with which he is associated include communicative competence and ethnopoetics, He was involved not only in central theoretical and methodological frames but also in the application of this work to practice in education via the development of communicative language teaching (CLT) and he was deeply committed to helping overcome inequality
