Economists, cognitive psychologists, and anthropologists have analyzed many situations where decision makers must consider the chances of future events occurring. Such probabilities are often called “risks” and “uncertainties.” Some anthropologists have attempted to use the theoretical models of economists and the findings of the laboratory experiments of cognitive psychologists in their efforts to understand the effects of risk and uncertainty on decision making in fieldwork settings. Most anthropologists, however, regard the approaches of economists and psychologists as providing insufficient descriptions of how people think about risk and uncertainty when making most choices. The real situations in which people make decisions related to risk and uncertainty are more complex than the formal models that are sometimes used to analyze them. Anthropologists can provide the ethnographic context necessary for a full understanding of cultural behavior related to risk and uncertainty
